COURSE LOGISTICS
- Text book: Sverdrup, Duxbury and Duxbury:
Introduction to the World's Oceans, 8th edition, 2004. You can
buy this as an E-Book for $63,
or in hard-cover for about $105 from Amazon.com, eCampus.com, or other retailer.
This book is not available at Water St. books.
- Text readings: for each lecture, read the relevant
material in the text book. As third-level students, it is your responsibility
to engage with the text. I will not break out and assign specific sections.
Figuring out what to read is not difficult: The chapter headings and subheadings
are very explanitory, and there is a very good index.
There is more subject matter in the text than we can cover in a semester.
I do encourage you to read in areas that we won't discuss in class: they
are no less fascinating, we just don't have time to do everything. You will
be responsible, however, only for those subjects that we discuss in class.
- Reading packet: pick this up in the Geosciences
office. The reading list is organised by topic. It will generally be obvious
which readings are most closely related to which section of the course, and
I will remind you as we go along. The purpose of the readings is to provide
background and context to the material we cover in lecture, and in most cases
to add a human dimension to the information. The readings are required,
and will appear on the exams.
- The all-day field trip will be on Friday
April 30th. Details are on the syllabus. ATTENDANCE IS REQUIRED,
AND THERE IS NO MAKEUP. CLEAR THIS DATE WITH YOUR OTHER PROFESSORS AND COACHES
NOW!
